{"id":21809,"date":"2014-08-28T15:32:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T19:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/?p=2655"},"modified":"2024-05-21T15:54:20","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T19:54:20","slug":"scirens-broader-impacts-are-loud-and-clear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/scirens-broader-impacts-are-loud-and-clear\/","title":{"rendered":"SciREN\u2019s Broader Impacts are Loud and Clear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina Sea Grant has a strong tradition of teaching the teachers about all things marine science \u2013 thus multiplying the impacts as each teacher reaches more students.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 13, we will cosponsor a lesson planning workshop in Raleigh for scientists, who will share those lessons with dozens of educators during a Nov. 13 event at the <a title=\"NC Museum of Natural Sciences\" href=\"http:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SciREN-Triangle-Logo_web.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2658 size-thumbnail\" src=\"\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SciREN-Triangle-Logo_web-150x150.gif\" alt=\"&quot;SciREN Triangle&quot; logo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The educators, in turn will bring the lessons to classrooms, museums, aquariums and other learning centers. What a great return for our investments in SciREN \u2013 the Scientific Research and Education Network that was organized by marine science graduate students who attended a workshop from the <a title=\"Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence SouthEast\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cosee-se.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence SouthEast<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Sea Grant programs in the Carolinas and Georgia were key partners in COSEE SE and the workshops known as a <a title=\"Research Educator Exchange Forum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cosee-se.org\/ForScientists\/researcheducatorexchangeforumreef\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REEF, or Researcher Educator Exchange Forum<\/a>. I was pleased to help organize panels that shared perspectives from media, public information officers and a funding agency. North Carolina Sea Grant provided additional funding to help pilot the resulting local communities of practice in our coastal region and in Raleigh, each bringing together researchers with classroom teachers and nonformal educators.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2660\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2660\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SciREN_teaching_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2660 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SciREN_teaching_web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Scientist speaking with educator.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At SciREN, scientists present hands-on activities to educators. Photo by Emily Woodward- UNC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our marine educator <a title=\"Terri Kirby Hathaway profile \" href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/about-us\/our-team\/terri-kirby-hathaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Terri Kirby Hathaway<\/a> participated in SciREN\u2019s first two coastal workshops, along with researchers, and representatives from agencies and nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p>You may have read <em>Coastwatch<\/em> stories about <a title=\"Beyond the Choir: Scientists Tune in More Students\" href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/previous-issues\/2013-2\/summer-2013\/beyond-the-choir-scientists-tune-in-more-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REEF<\/a> and <a title=\"Meting of the Minds: Scientists and Teachers Connect\" href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/previous-issues\/2013-2\/summer-2013\/meeting-of-the-minds-scientists-and-teachers-connect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SciREN<\/a> last year. And we will have a follow-up story, written by one of the SciREN founders, in the autumn issue of <em>Coastwatch <\/em>that is at the printer.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, share this post with scientists who may want to join the lesson planning workshop on Sept. 13 \u2013 slots are filling fast! They then will fine tune the lessons to share Nov. 13 at SciREN Triangle.<\/p>\n<p>Registration also is open for educators who want to come meet the scientists who do the North Carolina research that provides the data that fill the lesson plans that match grade-specific class requirements that the teachers can use to engage students with real world topics. Whew. Those are some connections.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks again to the SciREN team who embraced the COSEE SouthEast and REEF concepts and created their own organization that continues to grow. Several of these graduate students work on research projects funded by North Carolina Sea Grant, so we are proud on multiple counts.<\/p>\n<p>We will be watching for tweets from the lesson planning workshop and SciREN Triangle.
