We planned a day-long event for Girl Scouts in northeast North Carolina and southeast Virginia focusing on STEAM \u2014 science, technology, engineering, art and math.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7745\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7745\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7745\" src=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/introducing_ourselves.jpg\" alt=\"Women scientist\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That&#8217;s me on the left, kicking off the event \u2014 and to my left are all the wonderful scientists.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our vision for this marine-related event had women scientists and educators sharing their knowledge, expertise and career paths with Cadettes (middle school) and Seniors (high school) on a Saturday in May.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7746\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7746\" src=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/signing_in.jpg\" alt=\"Girls around a table\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We had about 40 Girl Scouts attend the coastal STEAM event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the steering committee, I was joined by colleagues from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsccc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast<\/a> (GSCCC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erdc.usace.army.mil\/Locations\/CHL\/FRF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\u2019 Field Research Facility<\/a> (FRF) in Duck, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of North Carolina\u2019s Coastal Studies Institute<\/a> (CSI), as well as some local community members.<\/p>\n<p>This inaugural coastal STEAM event featured presenters from UNC CSI, FRF, <a href=\"http:\/\/obxdolphins.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research<\/a>, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/roanoke-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/jennettes-pier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennette\u2019s Pier<\/a>. The steering committee is anxious to hear the thoughts of those who participated. We&#8217;re ready to begin planning the 2017 Girl Scouts and Coastal STEAM event!
