{"id":21995,"date":"2019-08-14T07:50:20","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T11:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/?p=11958"},"modified":"2024-05-21T15:54:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T19:54:04","slug":"nc-flood-insurance-policyholders-saved-over-1-2-million-in-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/nc-flood-insurance-policyholders-saved-over-1-2-million-in-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"NC Flood Insurance Policyholders Saved Over $1.2 Million in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wind-borne standards in the North Carolina Residential Building Code saved flood insurance policyholders in nine coastal communities over $1.2 million during the past year.<\/p>\n<p>The Community Rating System (CRS) \u2014 a program that helps foster floodplain management \u2014 reduces flood insurance premium rates for policyholders, enhances public safety, and reduces damages to property and public infrastructure. To encourage implementation of better building codes, the program\u2019s incentives rely on a local building code evaluation before they kick in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insurance incentives encourage communities and individuals to adopt high storm-resistant standards,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/about-us\/our-team\/spencer-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Spencer Rogers<\/a>, North Carolina Sea Grant&#8217;s coastal construction and erosion specialist. \u201cIn this case, flood insurance incentives encourage building codes with higher wind standards.
