{"id":32783,"date":"2026-01-26T08:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T13:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/?p=32783"},"modified":"2026-02-06T09:12:52","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T14:12:52","slug":"winter-2026-farmed-shellfish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/winter-2026-farmed-shellfish\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than Seafood"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">North Carolina Sea Grant and the NC Coastal Federation are collaborating on a bold project to accelerate growth of the state\u2019s farmed shellfish industry.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Along North Carolina\u2019s shorelines, shellfish farmers are helping to cultivate more than just seafood.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/content.ces.ncsu.edu\/the-economic-impact-of-north-carolinas-shellfish-mariculture-industry#:~:text=OYSTER%20FARMING%20HAS%20EMERGED%20AS,the%20industry%20across%20the%20state.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>They are growing jobs<\/strong><\/a>, protecting fragile coastal ecosystems, and reviving a cultural legacy deeply rooted in the state\u2019s coastal waters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Carolina is home to over 1.4 million acres of coastal waters with biological and physical characteristics that make it uniquely well-suited for shellfish mariculture. The state\u2019s long history of shell fishing, combined with skilled commercial fishers and ready-to-use equipment, creates a strong foundation for a thriving mariculture industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, chronic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbsnc.org\/blogs\/science\/oysternomics-new-report-highlights-economic-impact-of-oysters-in-north-carolina\/#:~:text=Oysters%20by%20the%20Numbers,the%20North%20Carolina%20Coastal%20Federation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>overharvesting, diseases and pollution<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;have repeatedly set back the industry. The new project encompasses several critical initiatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the project will update the&nbsp;<em>North Carolina Shellfish Mariculture Strategic Plan<\/em>&nbsp;to address emerging siting challenges for the industry by examining the placement of shellfish aquaculture in Pender and Onslow counties. Input from community members will inform the mapping of key areas, identifying and helping to resolve conflicts, as well as clarifying \u201cpublic trust water uses\u201d (waters legally protected for public benefit).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will facilitate focus groups with different users of the public trust waters, including shellfish farmers, charter boat fishers, recreational boaters, and people who live along the water&#8217;s edge to provide detailed maps about potential user conflicts,\u201d says Jane Harrison, North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s coastal economics specialist, who leads this part of the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harrison also leads efforts to expand outreach and education through the North Carolina Oyster Trail, building public awareness and economic opportunities. Credit: Baxter Miller.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaborative model not only solves long-standing logistical barriers, she adds, \u201cbut also establishes a scalable model for how local governments, nonprofits, industry, and funders can partner to support sustainable aquaculture growth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zivanovic-Nenadovic also says the Mariculture Hub will involve assembling a stakeholder group, led by UNC Wilmington marine biologist Ami Wilbur, to \u201cforge a path forward for establishing a commercial hatchery in North Carolina.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project builds on long-term collaboration among state agencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat excites me most is the uniqueness of partnership and the blend of economic development with ecological outcomes \u2014 a goal that the Coastal Federation has been working toward over the past four decades \u2014 showing that economy and ecology do not need to be at odds,\u201d Zivanovic-Nenadovic says. \u201cIt\u2019s proof that you can grow a modern, competitive industry while improving the health of the coast.
