North Carolina\u2019s coastal communities offer a range of assets, including diverse ecosystems and deep culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur coastal region also faces significant challenges,\u201d notes North Carolina Sea Grant Executive Director Susan White<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the request of the University of North Carolina System<\/a> President Tom Ross, White has worked with colleagues within her program, across the UNC System, and in partner agencies and industries to develop a wide-ranging agenda for North Carolina\u2019s Coastal Conference<\/a> on April 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Topics include energy, economies, ecosystems, fisheries, hazard mitigation, marine industries and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot only do we have panels representing varied perspectives and experiences, we also expect lively discussions with the stakeholders who attend,\u201d White adds. \u201cOur goals include new collaborations or expansion of existing partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a preview, this issue of Coastwatch<\/em><\/a> offers a quick glance at two topics \u2014 population studies and transportation planning \u2014 that often provide groundwork for many decisions.
