Her research focuses on sustainable tourism and climate change. She <\/em><em>also <\/em><em>is a birder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Birding is big business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wingsoverwater.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wings Over Water<\/a>, which takes place Oct. 20 to 25, 2015, draws hundreds of birders to the Outer Banks and points along North Carolina\u2019s northern coast. In 2011, the U.S. Fish &amp; Wildlife Service reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/southeast\/economicImpact\/pdf\/2011-BirdingReport--FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">birders in the United States spent a record $41 billion on trip- and equipment-related expenditures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/eos.ucs.uri.edu\/EOSWebOPAC\/OPAC\/Details\/Record.aspx?IndexCode=-1&amp;TaskCode=475294&amp;HitCount=1&amp;CollectionCode=2&amp;SortDirection=Descending&amp;CurrentPage=1&amp;CurrentLinkCode=EOSMAIN|17274127|1|1661856&amp;SelectionType=0&amp;SearchType=2&amp;BibCode=EOSMAIN|17274127|1|1661856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birder Travel Decisions Survey<\/a> I conducted in 2014, respondents noted spending an average of $500 per person on their most recent birding trip in the U.S. The study was funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina Sea Grant<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncwildlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The questions focused on a variety of travel choices birders make. More than 600 avid birders \u2014 92 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that \u201cbirding is a part of me\u201d \u2014 from North Carolina and surrounding states responded to the survey. For this research, I worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.ces.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tourism Extension<\/a>, which is part of N.C. Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State University.<\/p>\n<p>Birders, I found, are willing to pay 6 to 10 percent more for environmentally or birder-friendly products and services. They are very concerned about the effects of climate change on birds and bird habitat, and they have clear opinions about the strategies businesses can implement to attract birders.<\/p>\n<p>Spoiler alert: Putting up feeders is not a bad start!<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ncbirdingtrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina Birding Trail<\/a> developed the <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.ces.ncsu.edu\/birder-friendly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birder Friendly Business and Birder Friendly Community Program<\/a> to help businesses along the trail to better market to birders.<\/p>\n<p>The Birding Trail was founded by the N.C. The goal is to launch the updated training in spring 2016.
