Staff members use the tanks for K-12 education demonstrations throughout the year, and for summer camps at MarineQuest.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11968\" style=\"width: 524px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11968\" class=\"wp-image-11968\" src=\"http:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show.jpg 3016w, https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/currents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/08\/Wave-Tanks-Show-1024x662.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spencer Rogers built wave tanks for Jennette\u2019s Pier Aquarium and MarineQuest.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Spencer Rogers, North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s coastal construction and erosion specialist, designed and built the tanks, basing the motors and controls on a similar wave tank at the University of Delaware. UNCW Machine Shop staff fabricated and welded parts for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tanks can produce up to a three-inch wave and are intended to be an active model for how the beach works,\u201d Rogers says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beaches are changing all the time, but students don\u2019t always realize that.
