Communities throughout the country are connecting with the great outdoors during the 7th annual Latino Conservation Week<\/a>, July 18 through July 26.\u00a0<\/em>We celebrate the occasion here with Frank L\u00f3pez<\/a>,\u00a0extension director for North Carolina Sea Grant and the NC Water Resources Research Institute.<\/em><\/p>\n Frank L\u00f3pez, extension director for North Carolina Sea Grant and the NC Water Resources Research Institute, kayaks on a lake in Garner, N.C.<\/p><\/div>\n What does conservation mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n Frank L\u00f3pez<\/em>: Being able to benefit and enjoy outdoor places that others cared for and saved. I enjoy being on the water or out on a trail. Conservation also means using those spaces in a way that allows others to benefit and enjoy them in the future.<\/p>\n What advice do you have for a young person looking to start a career?<\/strong><\/p>\n Frank L\u00f3pez<\/em>: Don’t be afraid to take risks and always be looking for the opportunity to increase your network. It’s hard to\u00a0succeed alone. There are a lot of people in our profession willing and able to help you along the way. I decided on my career path through an internship and then found my first job managing a protected area in Ohio through the NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship.<\/p>\n<\/a>
