Photo courtesy NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While it looks like North Carolina and much of the East Coast will avoid direct landfall by Hurricane Joaquin, the effects of heavy rain and flooding still are being felt by much of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricanes are just one of the hazards that commonly take place in fall. Fortunately, the National Weather Service\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/weatherreadynation\/fall_safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fall Safety Campaign<\/a> provides valuable safety and preparedness resources, as well as\u00a0 information to share through social media. The fall safety campaign\u00a0began Sept. 1 and runs through Nov. 30.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have what it takes to be weather ready? Here are hazards associated with autumn, and resources to make sure you and your family are prepared.<\/p>\n<h3>Hurricanes<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_5705\" style=\"width: 752px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5705\" class=\"wp-image-5705\" src=\"\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/hurricane_infographic.png\" alt=\"Hurricane infographic\" width=\"742\" height=\"449\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NOAA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hurricane season runs through Nov, 30, peaking between mid-August and the end of September. There are many hazards associated with hurricanes, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes and rip currents.<\/p>\n<p>If you live near the coast, it is important to know your evacuation plan, and make sure you and your family have a communication plan. Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/prepare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Hurricane Center<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h3>El Ni\u00f1o<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NWS Climate Prediction Center<\/a> has predicted a strong El Ni\u00f1o this winter.<\/p>\n<p>According to NOAA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Ocean Service<\/a>, during an El Nino phase, warmer-than-average water temperatures in the Eastern equatorial Pacific can influence weather around the world. Find out more about the weather pattern <a href=\"http:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your area, this hazard\u00a0may impose\u00a0wetter, dryer or warmer\u00a0conditions than usual. To learn more about how El Ni\u00f1o can impact your area go\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/weatherreadynation\/elnino_article.html#.Vg08CvlViko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Solar Storms<\/h3>\n<p>Solar storms, or an extreme space-weather event, can knock out the electrical power grid, leaving communities without power.\u00a0To be prepared for these\u00a0outages, keep extra batteries or have a hand-crank charger. The National Weather Service suggests any emergency kit should contain enough food and water for the entire family\u00a0for a minimum of three days. For more information on space weather, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Wildfires<\/h3>\n<p>This year, the western United States already has seen extensive damage from wildfires. If wildfires are prevalent in your area, know your evacuation route and make sure your house is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firewise.org\/?sso=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">firewise<\/a>. There even are resources on firewise landscaping practices in specific states, including <a href=\"https:\/\/gardening.ces.ncsu.edu\/weather-2\/preventing-fire-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina<\/a>.\u00a0To learn more about wildfires, go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/fire\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Winter Weather<\/h3>\n<p>Snow, wind chill, ice and frost. While we may be a few months away from winter, that doesn\u2019t keep early <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/winter\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">winter weather<\/a> from creeping in. Most winter fatalities are due to car accidents. Slow down and only venture into this weather if necessary. Build an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readync.org\/plan-and-prepare\/get-kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emergency preparedness kit<\/a> for your home and car to go the extra mile.<\/p>\n<h3>Flooding<\/h3>\n<p>Turn Around Don\u2019t Drown! It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most large vehicles. Six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. And remember that water may look shallower than it really is.<\/p>\n<h3>Wind<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_5713\" style=\"width: 752px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5713\" class=\"wp-image-5713\" src=\"\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/wind_infographic.png\" alt=\"Wind infophraic. \" width=\"742\" height=\"451\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NOAA.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Windy conditions are common in the fall. Straight-line winds can exceed 100 mph, and can knock over semi-trucks, trees and power lines. They also can topple mobile homes and send dangerous debris flying through the air.\u00a0If caught in strong winds, seek shelter. Avoid trees, power lines and objects that could blow around. Learn about wind safety <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/wind\/index.shtml\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Drought<\/h3>\n<p>The historic drought in California has grabbed headlines all year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/drought\/action.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take action<\/a> to conserve water by checking pipes in the home for leaks, and practice fire safety.
