Photo by Vanda Lewis.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the late afternoon when your stomach starts to grumble, your mind may start to wonder: <em>What\u2019s for dinner<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most likely, you don\u2019t have a ready answer. According to polling data, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/05\/03\/476488223\/what-s-for-dinner-the-options-for-a-fast-answer-multiply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">80 percent<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of Americans do not know what they will have for dinner at 4 p.m. This quandary likely leads to another: <em>cook at home or eat out<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More and more, Americans are choosing to eat out. The average household acquires food from restaurants and other eating places <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/publications\/80542\/eib-156.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more than five times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a week, a significant increase from the two times a week they averaged in the mid-1960s. Reinforcing this trend, sales at restaurants and bars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlas.com\/charts\/H1MitYpN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overtook spending on groceries<\/a> for the first time in spring 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While good for the restaurant industry, excessive eating out can be bad for our waistlines, pocketbooks and even our parenting. Eating one meal away from home each week can pack on an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/amber-waves\/2010\/june\/eating-out-increases-daily-calorie-intake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">additional 2 pounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> per person per year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Despite the low-cost perception of fast food, eating out potentially costs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/25\/opinion\/sunday\/is-junk-food-really-cheaper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">twice as much<\/a> as healthy food prepared at home. Disheartened cooks cite a lack of time, fresh ingredients and cooking skills as challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thankfully, there are plenty of resources available to overcome these barriers \u2014 including materials related to seafood made available by North Carolina Sea Grant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Reel in Your Catch<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seafood, including fish and seafood, is <a href=\"http:\/\/marinersmenu.org\/category\/seafood-is-health-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a good source<\/a> of high-quality protein, nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids. Eating seafood can help prevent heart disease and also may reduce the\u00a0risk of stroke, depression and other chronic diseases. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite proven benefits, the average American consumes just under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/10\/31\/499780982\/hey-looks-like-americans-are-finally-eating-more-fish\">5 ounces of seafood<\/a> per week.\u00a0The USDA suggests eating two servings \u2014 8 ounces total \u2014 a week for the general population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you like to shop local, seafood can be a great choice. North Carolina fishermen supply a wide variety of seafood choices year-round, though not every species is available at all times. Consult Sea Grant\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/program-areas\/education-training\/consumer-awareness\/\">availability charts<\/a> by region or by season to determine what you currently may find in the market from our waters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov\/Assets\/commercial\/fus\/fus14\/documents\/FUS%202014%20Fact%20Sheet%20FINAL.pdf\">90 percent<\/a> of all seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported so it is important not only to know what is in season\u00a0but also where to find local catch. Sea Grant collaborates with fishermen and local catch groups \u2014 <\/span>Brunswick Catch, <a href=\"http:\/\/carteretcatch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carteret Catch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocracokeseafood.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ocracoke Fresh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OuterBanksCatch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outer Banks Catch<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 to help consumers who prefer purchasing local products.
