Aquariums<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>School-aged kids can learn about aquatic animals and gain an appreciation for the coastal environment.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>April 7, 2017: Additional camps added at the end of the post<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If \u201cnow is the winter of our discontent\u201d (William Shakespeare in <em>Richard III<\/em>), then we should start planning for our summer of <em>content.<\/em>\u00a0By that, I am using two definitions of these homonyms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>con-\u2018tent \u2014 an adjective meaning pleased and satisfied; and<\/li>\n<li>\u2018con-tent \u2014 a noun meaning substance or something contained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s time to start thinking about summer camps for students! Many informal science-education facilities and organizations in North Carolina offer summer camps \u2014 residential and nonresidential opportunities for students of most ages. These events may have a marine focus, occur in the coastal region, or are a combination of both.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that some students have learning loss during their summer break from school. Exciting camp sessions full of hands-on and feet-wet learning can help stem that effect. Sea Camp, Surf Camp, Whale Camp, Sea Turtle Camp \u2014 there\u2019s something for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><em>DISCLAIMER: A mention in this post does not imply support or in-depth knowledge of the camps. Check their websites for details. Sign-ups for these camps are competitive, and the sessions fill up quickly. Online registration for all summer camps begins soon at the aquariums at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/roanoke-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roanoke Island<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/pks-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pine Knoll Shores<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/fort-fisher-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fort Fisher<\/a>, and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/jennettes-pier-experiences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jennette&#8217;s Pier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/coastalstudiesinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of North Carolina&#8217;s Coastal Studies Institute<\/a> has six, week-long <a href=\"http:\/\/coastalstudiesinstitute.org\/education\/k-12-programs\/day-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">summer camps<\/a> for students ages 10 to 15. The two Surf Science camps are offered in conjunction with Jennette\u2019s Pier. New this summer is the Art and Science Camp, July 31 to Aug. 4, that will incorporate art into STEM \u2014 science, technology, engineering and math \u2014 to make STEAM.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort<\/a> offers 1-, 2-, and 3-day nonresidential Summer Science School during June and July. These programs investigate the coastal environment and North Carolina&#8217;s rich maritime history. Registration starts on Feb. 14. Find descriptions of their 2017 programs in this <a href=\"http:\/\/ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2017-NCMMB-flp.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brochure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaturtlehospital.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital<\/a> partners with the private, nonprofit Sea Turtle Camp to offer residential experiences for ages 10 to 17 on Topsail Island, along with other camps in Hawai\u2018i and Costa Rica. More details are in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaturtlecamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2017-Sea-Turtle-Camp-Catalog.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 brochure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Wilmington&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/uncw.edu\/marinequest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MarineQuest<\/a> is accepting registrations for its summer camp sessions. MarineQuest offers half-day, residential and commuter camps for ages 4 to 17. The collection contains entries from around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Now, there is no excuse for the summer slide. Students, get out there and learn something new during the summer of 2017!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional camps added since this blog was posted<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The newly-formed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngscientistacademy.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Scientist Academy<\/a> in Wilmington is offering summer camps in June and July. Early-bird pricing available if you register by April 15.<\/li>\n<li>The Solar House offers two sessions of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/ncsu.edu\/nc-youth-ocean-conservation-summit\/camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coastal Science and Technologies Camps<\/a> for middle-school students on July 17 to 21 and Aug. 7 to 11. These camps are located at North Carolina State University&#8217;s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City.
