SUMMARY:River Critters and Pond Pals – Stream Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever seen a dragonfly in the winter? How about a mayfly? Where do these animals go once it turns cold\, and where do they come from when it starts to warm up? Freshwater macroinvertebrates can tell us many important features about their habitat. They are storytellers about the health of the ecosystem. Are there pollutants in the water? Let’s ask the leeches. Do these waters support lots of species? Let’s ask the caddisfly. \nJoin HAWK and Dr. Erika Young\, the Coastal and Marine Education Specialist for North Carolina Sea Grant\, for a special hands-on stream exploration opportunity for kids followed by a pizza dinner! Please register now as spots are limited! There will be many specimens to observe\, a scientific key to identify species\, and a game to match the larval form to the adult form. Registration is required for this evening of adventurous fun at the Matthews Community Center. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Virtual Forum: Baseline Conditions and Success Rates of Natural and Nature-Based Features
DESCRIPTION:Join New York Sea Grant and the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay in their second of three virtual forums. The primary goal of these forums is to address knowledge gaps Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) stakeholders (researchers\, policymakers\, and practitioners) have identified in a recent workshop pertaining to the implementation and management of Nature Based Solutions in New York State. It was found that baseline conditions for the evaluation of NNBF projects\, and success rates (and failures) of projects\, were two of the primary knowledge gaps they experienced. To be one step closer to addressing these gaps\, event organizers have invited experts in the field to present case studies from their own work\, on how they’ve managed to tackle these problems. Be prepared for discussions on NNBF projects\, networking\, and plenty of time to ask questions and discuss with our experts. \nSpeakers: Dr. Bret Webb (University of South Alabama)\, Dr. Chester Zarnoch (CUNY Baruch)\, Dr. Mariko Polk (North Carolina Sea Grant)\, and Dr. Joel Fodrie (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) \nSign up now at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIqcO2oqT0qGtXG2g-rmVOeIse9MxCBCwJ-

SUMMARY:NCWRA Winter Forum: Wetland Protections in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will summarize the recent US Supreme Court’s Sackett decision which narrowed the extent of the Clean Water Act\, notably for the Section 404 Permitting portion of the Act implemented primarily by the US Army Corps of Engineers. SUMMARY:Shellebrate NC Oyster Month in October
DESCRIPTION:Join us each October as we “shellebrate” the history\, culture\, economy\, and ecology of oysters in North Carolina! \nOysters play an important role in coastal communities. In the environment\, oysters improve water quality and create habitat for other animals. Their unique flavor makes them a desirable dish\, supporting the livelihoods of watermen and local economies across the state. In years past\, the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources\, NC Oyster Trail\, North Carolina Sea Grant\, and the NC Coastal Federation partnered to bring you a week of oyster facts\, resources\, and programming. In 2023\, we will put on NC OYSTER MONTH. Y’all get ready! \nWe share NC Oyster Month information on social media using the hashtags #NCOysterMonth #NCOysters #GiveAShuck #KeepShuckin’. \nView the full list of events at NC Oyster Trail
