This fellowship is designed to foster research addressing a coastal policy issue within the state\u2019s 20 coastal counties, and relating to one of these broad focus areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Healthy coastal ecosystems;<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable coastal development;<\/li>\n<li>Safe and sustainable seafood supply;<\/li>\n<li>Hazard resilience in coastal communities; and<\/li>\n<li>Environmental literacy and career initiation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Research and scholarly work conducted under this fellowship should include exploration of the legal implications of the chosen policy issue. The Center is a partnership of North Carolina Sea Grant, University of North Carolina School of Law, and University of North Carolina Department of City and Regional Planning.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Fellowship Amount<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>The fellowship amount is $5,000 per student (two students maximum).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Duration<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>One Semester: spring, summer or fall 2015. A final report on all activity conducted during this fellowship must be submitted within 60 days of the end of the fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>Only graduate students and law students in good academic standing and attending an accredited North Carolina university or college are eligible to apply. To be eligible for fellowship support, proposals submitted must relate to policy issues affecting the 20 coastal counties subject to the rules and policies of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission (Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Application<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>To apply, candidates must send a three-page (maximum) proposal, a current CV and letter of support from a major professor. The proposal should be in 12-point font, with one-inch margins. Proposals must contain the following sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Title<\/strong> (including student and major professor contact information);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Description<\/strong> of the project, including rationale and relevance of the project to the coastal management issue and the policy challenges;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Methods<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Clearly defined <strong>Tasks<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Timeline <\/strong>to complete the tasks;<\/li>\n<li>Declaration of <strong>Other Sponsored Support to<\/strong> <strong>be Received<\/strong> for the overall project; and<\/li>\n<li>Detailed <strong>Budget<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funds may be used for any purpose related to the project, including stipends. University overhead charges are not permitted. Matching funds are not required.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Deadline<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>Application materials must be received by 4 p.m. on <strong>Nov. 26, 2014<\/strong>. Applications should be sent via e-mail in Microsoft Word format to Lisa Schiavinato at <a href=\"mailto:lcschiav@ncsu.edu\">lcschiav@ncsu.edu<\/a>. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Review Process<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>The review panel will be chaired by Lisa Schiavinato, Center co-director and law, policy, and community development specialist for North Carolina Sea Grant and include John Fear, deputy director, North Carolina Sea Grant; and Tancred Miller, Coastal and Ocean Policy Manager, N.C. Division of Coastal Management. Additional participants may include North Carolina Sea Grant staff and Center advisory board members. Proposals will be ranked based on their relevance to the identified focus areas (see list above), quality of the proposed project, and adherence to the instructions provided in this call for proposals.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Award Funding<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>Successful applicants will be notified by <strong>Dec. 22, 2014<\/strong>. Funds will be channeled through each fellow\u2019s major professor, who must agree to serve as principal investigator on the project.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Final Report<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>At the completion of his\/her term, each fellow will submit a final report to Lisa Schiavinato. The final report on all activity conducted during the fellowship must be submitted within 60 days of the end of the fellowship.\u00a0Each fellow also will agree to work with the North Carolina Sea Grant communications team to translate the findings into an article for <em>Coastwatch<\/em> magazine and\/or other products.
