Most coastal buildings are unprepared for wind and rain from hurricanes. North Carolina Sea Grant works with local, state and federal partners to promote N.C. Department of Insurance and Insurance Institute for Buildings and Home Safety FORTIFIED HomeTM building standards for new and existing buildings.
Adaptations based on Sea Grant recommendations can reduce future wind and water damage to homes from hurricanes and other storms, lower insurance costs, and provide for more resilient communities. These homeowners also can also lower their insurance costs significantly.
