Coastal Resilience Team Competition. The program will provide up to $20,000 for one or more student teams to conduct two-year projects that will lead to more resilient habitats and communities on the North Carolina coastal plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each team will include two to four members, including\u00a0<em>at least one graduate student<\/em>\u00a0who will serve as the project lead, and\u00a0<em>at least one undergraduate<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each team will conduct research that addresses resilience in one or more of these areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ecosystem Resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are the impacts of higher and\/or saltier groundwater levels on forest, agriculture, and\/or coastal ecosystems?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will changing precipitation patterns impact stormwater management in the coastal zone?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will submerged aquatic vegetation communities respond to climate change?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What impacts do upstream conditions and management decisions have on downstream ecosystems and functioning?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can coastal communities engage underserved populations in planning for and implementing resilience and adaptation efforts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can local decision-making and policy integrate resilience planning?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What coastal infrastructure is most vulnerable and what can be done to mitigate the risk?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can natural and nature-based infrastructure be used strategically for community resilience, and what are the barriers to implementation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Economic Resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What aquaculture practices can buffer the industry against disasters and climate change impacts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the costs to our coastal communities, comparing&nbsp;<strong>a)&nbsp;<\/strong>climate change planning and investment to proactively prepare for a disaster, and&nbsp;<strong>b)&nbsp;<\/strong>opting instead for post disaster restoration and rebuilding?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will the economic costs of climate change impact our state\u2019s coastal communities, and, in particular, and how will it affect different sectors and populations?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional research topics that relate to these three focus areas will be considered.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each winning team will present their findings to North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s advisory board.
