Graduate Students Among Knauss Finalists"},"content":{"rendered":"
Contact: <\/em>Katie Mosher, kmosher@ncsu.edu<\/a>, 919-515-9069<\/em><\/p>\n The National Sea Grant Office today announced<\/a> 66 finalists for the\u00a02019 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. Four of the finalists \u2014\u00a0Alicia M. Cheripka, Jill Hamilton, Chrissy Hayes and William Thaxton \u2014\u00a0 are from three North Carolina universities.<\/p>\n The year-long fellowships in executive and legislative offices in and around Washington, D.C., begin in February 2019.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of the most remarkable successes of the Knauss program has been the long-sustaining network of personal and professional relationships that benefits these individuals throughout their careers,\u201d says Susan White, executive director of North Carolina Sea Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIndividuals I’ve been lucky enough to know \u2014 including N.C. fellows, as well as others from across the Sea Grant network over the past decade \u2014 bring exceptional levels of professionalism and situational awareness to their work.\u201d<\/p>\n This year\u2019s finalists from North Carolina already have accumulated a wealth of experience.<\/p>\n Their collective educational background and service have supported residents and ecosystems from Indonesia to Oahu and from Peru to Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n Here are the North Carolina fellows:<\/p>\n Alicia M. Cheripka<\/strong> graduates in August from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a master\u2019s degree in marine biology.<\/p>\n Jill Hamilton<\/strong> graduated with a master\u2019s degree in environmental management from Duke University.<\/p>\n Chrissy Hayes<\/strong>\u00a0also is a recent graduate from Duke. She earned a master\u2019s of environmental management with a concentration in coastal environmental management.<\/p>\n William Thaxton<\/strong> will complete his master\u2019s in biology at East Carolina University this fall.<\/p>\n The esteemed fellowship is marking its 40th anniversary.
