Lisa Levin, Distinguished Professor at the Center for Marine Biodiversity and\u00a0Conservation and Integrative Oceanography Division at Scripps\u00a0Institution of Oceanography, will present “The Final Frontier: Deep-Ocean Discoveries and 21st- Century Challenges” at North Carolina State University on Thursday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. A reception at 3 p.m. will precede this special guest lecture.<\/p>\n

The College of Natural Resources<\/a>, the College of Sciences<\/a>, and North Carolina Sea Grant<\/a> are sponsoring Levin’s guest lecture, which will take place at Stewart Theatre in the Talley Student Union on NC State’s campus.<\/p>\n

Levin’s talk will explore how rapidly changing technology has advanced\u00a0understandings of deep-sea biodiversity, revealed unexpected climate\u00a0impacts, and enabled growing interest in the extraction of fish, energy and\u00a0mineral resources from the deep ocean. She also will propose a new\u00a0role for scientists in addressing the challenges of deep-ocean\u00a0sustainability and biodiversity conservation in the 21st century.<\/p>\n

Last year, Levin received the A.C. Redfield Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography. At the time, the association noted Levin’s \u201cextraordinary long-term contributions to understanding the composition and function of seafloor ecosystems” and “her leadership in identifying and communicating anthropogenic pressures on aquatic ecosystems, with relevance to policies for sustainable and healthy seas.\u201d<\/p>\n
