North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications until June 7 for the N.C. Marine Fisheries Fellowship<\/a> for graduate students in natural resources or marine sciences.<\/p>\n

The fellowship is open to students nearing completion of, or who have recently completed, their advanced degree program at southeastern universities and colleges from Maryland to Texas.<\/p>\n

The selected fellow will be placed with the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries<\/a> (DMF) and North Carolina State University\u2019s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology<\/a> (CMAST), beginning in August 2019. Both facilities are in Morehead City, along North Carolina\u2019s central coast, overlooking Bogue Sound. The fellowship provides an annual stipend of $38,000.<\/p>\n

The new fellow will use tagging data to estimate important demographic rates for select North Carolina fisheries. These estimates will be used to improve stock assessments and management decisions for important resource species in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past decade, this fellowship program has been valuable and successful\u201d, says Laura Lee, who leads the DMF stock assessment group. \u201cIt gives students access and opportunity to work with real world data and to address current research needs,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd it allows the fellows to develop hands on skills that are directly applicable to fisheries science problems.”<\/p>\n

Sea Grant Executive Director Susan White agrees. \u201cThis program helps develop future leaders by giving scientists early-on, real-world experience considering complex questions,\u201d she adds. \u201cIn turn, they bring to the agency new tools for fisheries management, including data analysis methods and visualizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffrey Buckel, an NC State fisheries biologist based at CMAST, will coordinate the selection process. The selection announcement will be made in July.<\/p>\n

Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m., June 7, 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
