The anticipated start date is August 1, 2020, with an end date of July 31, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>This program provides real-world experience and fosters the careers of graduate students interested in population and ecosystem dynamics and stock assessment, or in marine resource economics. Each fellow must work with a NOAA Fisheries mentor, who may serve on the fellow\u2019s committee.<\/p>\n<p>Two categories of this joint fellowship are available: <strong>population and ecosystem dynamics<\/strong> and <strong>marine resource economics<\/strong>. Each offers up to $40,000 in federal funds. Cost sharing of at least 20 percent by the selected student\u2019s institution of higher education is required. Funding is contingent on availability of funds and satisfactory performance by the recipients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fellowship allows students to pursue their research in the field while also providing professional development opportunities that will benefit their future careers,\u201d says John Fear, deputy director of North Carolina Sea Grant. \u201cSeveral of our state\u2019s nominees have been awarded this fellowship over the years and have found the experience extremely valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prospective\u00a0<strong><em>population and ecosystem dynamics<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>fellows must be admitted to a doctoral program in population dynamics or a related field at the time of application. Funding is for up to three years. NOAA Fisheries expects to select three new population dynamics fellows in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants for the\u00a0<strong><em>marine resource economics<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>fellowship must be admitted to a doctoral program in natural resource economics or a related field at the time of application. Funding is for up to three years, for one fellow nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Birkenbach from Duke University received the 2016-2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/nc-graduate-student-receives-national-fellowship\/\">marine resource economics fellowship<\/a>. She evaluated how the management of quotas affects fishing season lengths and ex-vessel prices in U.S. fisheries. <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.noaa.gov\/News\/Article\/ArtMID\/1660\/ArticleID\/635\/Research-highlight-New-evidence-that-catch-shares-slow-the-race-to-fish\">Read her story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Carolina applicants\u00a0must\u00a0file their applications through North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s eSeaGrant online portal at\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/go.ncsu.edu\/ncesg\">go.ncsu.edu\/ncesg<\/a><\/u><\/strong>.
