\"\"<\/a>After recently being named the state\u2019s best print publication, Coastwatch <\/em>magazine has released its Winter 2019 issue<\/a>. The latest edition of the flagship publication from North Carolina Sea Grant covers a wide array of content, including sea level rise and its effects on North Carolina terrain \u2013 beginning with the birth of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

Scientist Stanley R. Riggs takes readers back long before the recent acceleration of rising seas from human causes. The 200-million-year-old story of sea level rise<\/a>, Riggs says, reflects a dynamic coastline, and it also includes a record of how North Carolinians have responded to the encroaching ocean over the last few centuries.<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Story of Ricky Moore<\/a>,\u201d IndyWeek<\/em>\u2019s Best Chef in the Triangle talks about the southern roots of his cuisine. North Carolina\u2019s foodways came to mean something new, Moore says, after he gained experience in the culinary arts abroad. Check out the excerpt from his book.<\/p>\n

Next, Lee Cannon leads readers on a trek into the wetlands. In \u201cThe Ghost Hunters<\/a>,\u201d she tells how cutting-edge scientists Emily Ury and Melinda Martinez are using remote sensing technology to investigate the mysteries of coastal ghost forests \u2014 where sea level rise and saltwater intrusion are dramatically changing ecosystems.<\/p>\n

The Winter 2019 issue<\/a> of Coastwatch<\/em> marks the close of another year that the NC Association of Government Information Officers has recognized the magazine with multiple awards.<\/p>\n

The Autumn 2019 issue<\/a> won first place from the N.C. Association of Government Information Officers for print publications. Appearing in the Summer 2019 issue<\/a>, Julie Leibach\u2019s \u201cTesting the Waters<\/a>\u201d earned best feature story, her second straight year with the top honor in that category, and Sarah Speigler\u2019s \u201cLand Versus Sea<\/a>\u201d finished second in the category.<\/p>\n

Last year, Leibach\u2019s \u201cThe Long View<\/a>\u201d won best feature, and the issue in which it appeared, Summer 2018<\/a>, was the the NCAGIO’s runner-up for best in print.<\/p>\n
