North Carolina Sea Grant has debuted a new educational resource for grades 6 through 12. Coastwatch Classroom<\/em><\/a> expands on select articles from Coastwatch<\/em> magazine through a series of guiding questions and a comprehensive list of related reading materials.<\/p>\n

Each Coastwatch Classroom<\/em> edition also includes the relevant learning standards under the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Ocean Literacy Standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope this new resource will open teachers\u2019 and students\u2019 eyes to the fascinating and important coastal research going on in their own state,\u201d says Terri Kirby Hathaway, North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s marine education specialist, who developed Coastwatch Classroom<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>So far, two Coastwatch Classroom<\/em> installments are available; each connects to an article in the Autumn issue of Coastwatch<\/em><\/a>, N.C. Sea Grant\u2019s flagship publication. The inaugural edition explores how researchers are examining a way to sustainably harvest horseshoe crab blood<\/a> for an important medical safety test. The second examines how citizen science can enhance water quality monitorin<\/a>g.<\/p>\n

\u201cI routinely hear from teachers how valuable free, trusted STEM educational materials are,\u201d Hathaway says. \u201cThe Sea Grant communications team is dedicated to Coastwatch<\/em>, and I\u2019m excited to repurpose that quality content for them through Coastwatch Classroom<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

For easy access, Coastwatch Classroom<\/em> and related articles all are available online at go.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch-classroom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In developing the new resource, Hathaway builds on the success of Curriculum Connection<\/em><\/a>, which delves into articles from the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium\u2019s quarterly publication, Coastal Heritage<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that connecting students along the K-12 pipeline with ongoing research is key to not only increasing their fundamental understanding of certain science concepts but also \u2018hooking\u2019 them on to science \u2014 marine or otherwise \u2014 as a potential career in the future,\u201d says Elizabeth Vernon Bell, marine education specialist for the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoastwatch<\/em> is a terrific magazine and developing an educational supplement like Curriculum Connection<\/em> will enable the publications\u2019 information to reach a broad audience,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

The launch of Coastwatch Classroom<\/em> adds to a growing effort among various Sea Grant programs to provide educational content that will enhance virtual learning during the pandemic. \u201cAs an educator,\u201d Bell says, \u201cit\u2019s been inspiring to see how the Sea Grant network as a whole has risen to the challenge of developing online content and retooling field-based and classroom-based programming to an impactful virtual experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
