Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio, fisheries specialists with over 40 years of combined experience, will bring together state experts in new virtual classes designed for recreational and commercial fishermen \u2014 and for anyone else interested in fisheries science.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13251\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-Fisheries-Flyer-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13251\" src=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-Fisheries-Flyer-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Click for a printable flyer.\" width=\"300\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click for a printable flyer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s course is another broad overview of fisheries science, with examples specific to our state,\u201d Baker says. \u201cWe\u2019re also expanding the content and adding more class times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beginning February 16 and running for six consecutive Tuesday nights online, \u201cIntroductory Fisheries Science\u201d will cover fisheries management, ecology, sustainability, and more. Enrollment is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the past response, we felt the time was right to add more content,\u201d says Mirabilio. \u201cEach year this course generates a lot of enthusiasm from participants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mirabilio says an anonymous survey after last year\u2019s course netted significant positive feedback.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped to gain better knowledge of how regulations on fishing are set by the state and how they oversee marine fisheries,\u201d reported one attendee, \u201cand my expectations were exceeded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another course-taker sought to better understand management of fish stocks, especially what factors led to limits and closures. \u201cAnd the classes provided me with that,\u201d said the participant. \u201cI can see both sides a little more clearly now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s online course again gathers a wide range of specialists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcademic experts include Fred Scharf from UNC Wilmington, Jeff Buckel from NC State, and Joel Fodrie and Janet Nye from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,\u201d Baker says. \u201cPresenters offering perspectives from a management agency include Jacob Boyd, Laura Lee, Corrin Flora, and Lee Paramore from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries.
