For immediate release<\/strong><\/p>\n Contact:<\/strong> Carteret Community College is once again offering the Shellfish Farming Academy<\/a>. This summer\u2019s course covers shellfish farming techniques and strategies, as well as how to obtain a shellfish lease and start a business in North Carolina.<\/p>\n \u201cSeventeen students completed the program during two sessions in 2020, with nine more completing the spring offering in 2021,\u201d says North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s Bryan Snyder, the mariculture extension associate who leads the classes.<\/p>\n Snyder says earlier sessions of the Shellfish Academy already have helped students who now are completing the process of securing leases.\u00a0\u201cWe expect to see several more students apply for shellfish aquaculture leases in the near future,” he adds.<\/p>\n Steve Anderman, a partner in Three Little Spats oyster farm, took the course last year and says it helped him understand the regulatory and business practices involved.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Academy helped me be a better educated participant in the operation,\u201d Anderman says. \u201cThe course material and field work made me a better shellfish farmer. The Academy was time well spent.”<\/p>\n Students of all ages have enrolled in the Shellfish Academy. \u201cI am a senior,\u201d Anderman says. \u201cI am 70 years old and still like to learn new things ”<\/p>\n Starting on June 22, this summer\u2019s Shellfish Academy will meet on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 p.m., with outdoor field work (10 a.m. to 5 P.M.) on four Saturdays: July 3, July 17, July 31, and August 14.\u00a0The course fee is\u00a0$125.<\/p>\n
