Coastwatch<\/em>\u00a0has just released the Summer 2021 issue<\/a>. The latest edition of North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s award-winning magazine follows the Crystal Skipper butterfly through the dunes, looks at the future of flood mapping, explores how weather events affect water quality, and much more.<\/p>\n

In \u201cAbove and Below<\/a>,\u201d Alex K. Manda, a geological scientist at East Carolina University, explains how two of his projects study the impact of weather events on surface water and groundwater in coastal North Carolina. This excerpt from Stephen Culver\u2019s Troubled Waters: Understanding the Science Behind our Coastal Crisis<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>even includes a perilous episode with a black bear during fieldwork on the Alligator River.<\/p>\n

The award-winning Julie Leibach has been following a butterfly \u2014 in particular, a winged Crystal Coast native. In \u201cThe Butterfly Effect<\/a>\u201d she tells how the Crystal Skipper is inspiring stewardship along the coast as conservationists unite to save a species.<\/p>\n

Andrew Moore\u2019s \u201cMapping the Future<\/a>\u201d describes a new project to develop state-of-the-art flood maps. He describes how NC State scientists and their colleagues are creating models that can help coastal N.C. communities plan for rising seas and strengthening storms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no right way to become an astronaut,\u201d says NASA\u2019s Zena Cardman. \u201cThere is no single path.\u201d Katie Mosher\u2019s \u201cFrom Sea to Space<\/a>\u201d follows the career of the marine scientist turned astronaut, a journey that made Cardman eligible to become the first woman on the moon and for missions to Mars.<\/p>\n

How do loggerheads respond to hurricanes? These sea turtles get out of dodge, diving longer and changing locations. In \u201cSkedaddling Sea Turtles<\/a>,\u201d Sara Mirabilio explains how the effects linger for loggerheads even after storms pass.<\/p>\n

Mirabilio and Scott Baker, both fisheries specialists with North Carolina Sea Grant, also have gathered more of the latest science for anglers in this issue\u2019s \u201cHook, Line & Science<\/a>.\u201d This edition includes a study showing that fishing experience might not make a big difference when it comes to who lands a fish — at least not for every kind of catch.<\/p>\n

As climate change brings more intense hurricanes and higher seas, homeowners still have options that can help to reduce the risk of property damage. In \u201cAgainst Wind and Water<\/a>,\u201d Allison Fisk talked with North Carolina Sea Grant coastal construction specialist Spencer Rogers about a number of options for more resilient roofing. Not only can homeowners prevent damage, but they also can save money on insurance premiums.<\/p>\n

As always, Vanda Lewis has collected more succulent new recipes for \u201cMariner\u2019s Menu<\/a>\u201d: Asian curried shrimp, mahi-mahi with tropical glaze, easy grilled soft-shell crabs, and triggerfish with shallot butter.<\/p>\n
