The APEX judges said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is \u201cone of the best\u201d educational programs to emerge during the coronavirus pandemic following a shift to online educational settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The lessons are a collaborative effort of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrri.ncsu.edu\/partnerships\/watershed-stewardship-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NC Watershed Stewardship Network (NCWSN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with key support from North Carolina Sea Grant, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrri.ncsu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NC Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProjectWETNC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Project WET<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbsnc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PBS North Carolina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/raleighnc.gov\/stormwater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">City of Raleigh Stormwater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillsboroughnc.gov\/government\/departments-and-divisions\/stormwater-and-environmental-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town of Hillsborough Stormwater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnep.nc.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with funding from GSK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christy Perrin, sustainable waters and communities coordinator for the state\u2019s Sea Grant and WRRI programs, credits the partnership with PBS North Carolina as critical to the success. \u201cThey led the development of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team combined efforts for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrri.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Watershed-Wisdom-Learning-from-home-guide_Apr-9-2020.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning from Home<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> guide that provided accessibility for students who were learning remotely as the COVID pandemic emerged in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside Perrin, the project has had leadership from Paula Edelson of PBS North Carolina and Lauren Daniel of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deq.nc.gov\/about\/divisions\/water-resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NC Division of Water Resources Educational Programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The team had several goals in developing a product capable of teaching students while also \u201cgetting students outdoors, empowering them\u201d to learn more about watersheds, Perrin notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 9,000 K-12 educators and students throughout North Carolina already have accessed the educational activities that include options for in-person sessions indoors and outdoors, as well as remote learning. Schools across the state continue to use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to help students learn about the water cycle, consider how to keep our water clean and safe, and take interest in their local waterways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is divided into different sessions and activities, including entirely online components like \u201cWays of Watersheds.\u201d The APEX judges cited that element as \u201cthe highlight\u201d of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201ca colorful, engaging lesson explaining how crucial watersheds are to healthy water.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unctv.pbslearningmedia.org\/resource\/watershed-wisdom\/lesson-plan-unc-tv-science\/#.XqCH9c1Jmpo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">complete <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watershed Wisdom <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lessons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can be accessed for free.
