For immediate release<\/strong><\/p>\n contact<\/strong>:\u00a0Scott Baker, <\/i>msbaker@ncsu.edu<\/i><\/a>, 910-962-2492<\/i><\/p>\n North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for the 2022 Hook, Line & Science\u00a0<\/em>Communication Fellowship until 5 p.m. on May 2, 2022. This fellowship will provide a current or recent graduate student from a North Carolina college or university with a one-year opportunity to communicate fisheries science to anglers and the public through North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s popular Hook, Line & Science<\/em> series.<\/p>\n Since 2018, North Carolina Sea Grant fisheries specialists Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio have curated content for Hook, Line, & Science<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>publishing more than 150 lay-friendly summaries of research of interest to saltwater anglers for the weekly series.<\/p>\n \u201cThis new fellowship will provide great experience for a science communicator to work through a well-established platform,\u201d says Baker. \u201cHook, Line & Science<\/em> reaches tens of thousands of readers annually, online and in print, through a wide variety of outlets.\u201d<\/p>\n Baker and Mirabilio strongly encourage applications from graduate students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, and\/or from traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, as well as from graduate students who can demonstrate how their interests can benefit underserved and underrepresented communities. Information about North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility is available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mirabilio says the $3,000 fellowship will start in June and run for one year.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Hook, Line & Science<\/em> Communication Fellow will look for research articles of interest to anglers and use a template to create lay-friendly summaries of the work,\u201d she explains. \u201cThe fellow’s writing also will be eligible for publication in the award-winning Coastwatch<\/em> magazine.\u201d<\/p>\n Each applicant will provide a writing sample tailored for Hook, Line & Science<\/em>.
