Spencer Rhea, a Ph.D. student in biology at Duke University, is investigating when and where ghost\u00a0forests will form next. Using satellite data to evaluate water color, Rhea is mapping coastal water salinity\u00a0for a special research project for North Carolina Sea Grant and NC Space Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis research provides opportunities\u00a0for students to utilize\u00a0NASA satellite\u00a0data to develop tools that can\u00a0be used regionally to predict and monitor\u00a0ghost forest development,\u201d says Jobi Cook, associate director\u00a0of NC Space Grant.<\/p>\n

North Carolina Sea Grant and NC Space Grant are providing this research opportunity in\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with Louisiana\u00a0Sea Grant and Louisiana Space Grant. John Fear, deputy director of North\u00a0Carolina Sea Grant, says the study of ghost forests is especially timely.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the impacts of sea level rise is the conversion of coastal forests to wetlands and eventually open\u00a0water,\u201d Fear explains. \u201cThis process proceeds through a \u2018ghost forest\u2019 stage. Tracking the loss of forests\u00a0and its effects is a sentinel tool in understanding and responding to how our coastal habitats are\u00a0changing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coastal forested wetlands die off as a result of flooding, hurricanes, and soil salinization, and\u00a0determining where salinization most occurs could lead to measures that protect vulnerable areas.\u00a0When seawaters and waters from wetlands mix, carbon from the wetland water attaches to salt from\u00a0the seawaters to form solid matter that sinks and leaves behind clearer waters.<\/p>\n

Rhea will use remote-sensing tools and mapping technology from NASA and NOAA to see where clearer waters are forming, thus determining where salt water is encroaching into coastal forested wetlands.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing remote sensing to detect saltwater intrusion through a change in watercolor is a novel\u00a0approach,\u201d says Rhea. \u201cIt could be a powerful new tool to understand and predict ghost forest\u00a0formation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhea will speak about his research at the 2024 NC Space Grant Symposium<\/a>.<\/p>\n
