He went on to escape waterspouts and a lightning strike and earn a living on the open water for 32 years. Melody Hunter-Pillion, a Global Change Fellow with the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, interviewed\u00a0Bryant on his 84th birthday for the Southern\u00a0Oral History Program, and <em>Coastwatch<\/em> includes much of their talk in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/from-hurricane-hazel-to-the-morning-light\/\">From Hurricane Hazel to the Morning Light: Coastal Carolina Through a Shrimper&#8217;s Eyes<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14464 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/SUMMER-2022-COASTWATCH-cover.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a>Coastwatch<\/em> also interviewed North Carolina Sea Grant&#8217;s Jane Harrison, who heads a new project that looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/the-new-pioneers\/\">the special challenges climate change brings to wastewater management<\/a>. Harrison says pioneering communities along the coast are taking steps to ensure homeowners have functioning septic systems and other types of onsite wastewater treatment \u2014 as groundwater rises and storms intensify.<\/p>\n<p>Maya Hoon, a 2021-2022 joint research fellow with North Carolina Sea Grant and NC Space Grant, has been investigating factors that affect <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/climate-change-and-resistance-to-antibiotics\/\">the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in surface waters<\/a>. She says the significant associations of high temperature and salinity with\u00a0antibiotic resistance are troubling, because climate change continues\u00a0to exacerbate both factors.<\/p>\n<p>Avid anglers know all about sharks swiping the catch. For this issue&#8217;s &#8220;Hook, Line &amp; Science,&#8221; North Carolina Sea Grant fisheries specialist Sara Mirabilio explains <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/hook-line-and-science\/\">how opportunistic sharks could affect conservation efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/climate-change-and-the-northern-migration\/\">Climate Change and the Northern Migration<\/a>,&#8221; Mirabilio also covers a new study that suggests warming waters mean that more animals \u2014 including sea turtles, manatees, and sharks \u2014 will be on the move.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Baker, also a fisheries specialist for North Carolina Sea Grant, has catalogued <a href=\"https:\/\/ncseagrant.ncsu.edu\/coastwatch\/current-issue\/summer-2022\/the-top-10-most-common-types-of-trash\/\">The Top Ten Most Common Kinds of Trash on the North Carolina Coast<\/a> &#8212; and he explains how to get involved in an international coastal cleanup.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren D.
