The North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) and North Carolina Sea Grant are accepting applications for a full-time communications specialist. This position serves as the primary communication expert for WRRI and as a contributing team member for NC Sea Grant.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs WRRI and NC Sea Grant have increased their outreach in recent years, the role of communications has expanded,\u201d says Susan White, director of both programs. \u201cWe are excited about the opportunities to share stories of current research, student scholars, fellows, teams, and partnerships across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

This communicator will develop products to share results of faculty and student research and related projects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as news about education and outreach efforts. Products will include printed and online resources, social media posts, reports, videos, podcasts, newsletters, blogposts, program identity pieces, educational materials, content for special events, and more.<\/p>\n

Primary duties include writing and editing, along with basic graphic design and other multimedia-content management. WRRI and NC Sea Grant\u2019s messages will inform a wide variety of lay and specialized audiences, while underscoring the value and impacts of these interdisciplinary, statewide programs. The communicator also will have key roles in assisting with annual reporting to funding agencies and to meet university requirements. The position includes collaborations with the Sea Grant and WRRI\u2019s national networks, as well as local, state, and additional national partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encourage a wide range of applicants, especially from communities that have been under-represented in the STEM arenas,\u201d says Katie Mosher, communication director for both programs and supervisor for this new position.<\/p>\n

Potential applicants should consult the complete posting on NC State University’s website<\/a><\/strong>. The position is journey level (mid-career) and will be located at the WRRI and NC Sea Grant headquarters on NC State University\u2019s Centennial Campus in Raleigh, N.C.<\/p>\n

Among the requirements are a bachelor\u2019s degree in a related field or a combination of a degree and experience, as well as a demonstrated ability to understand complex science and technology topics and to summarize those results into terms that different audiences will understand.<\/p>\n

Preferred qualifications include: experience in science communication or outreach; five years of professional experience, or a combination of an advanced degree and work experience in communications arenas that could include but that are not limited to journalism, marketing, and public affairs; and\/or professional experience in science and technical fields, including at least one year with a science communication focus that can be demonstrated in work samples.<\/p>\n
