For immediate release<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n contact<\/strong>: Jane Harrison, jane_harrison@ncsu.edu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n North Carolina Sea Grant will administer the national Community Engaged Internship Program<\/a> for undergraduate students on behalf of the 34 state-based Sea Grant programs in 2024 and 2025. Jane Harrison<\/a>, North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s coastal economics specialist, will serve as program lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harrison says North Carolina Sea Grant will facilitate the selection of 40 interns from underrepresented and indigenous communities. The undergraduates will receive funding, professional development and training, hands-on experience, and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Community Engaged Internship program will continue to provide invaluable opportunities for undergraduate students,\u201d Harrison says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program will benefit from strong collaboration with the National Sea Grant Office and the national Community Engaged Internship coordination committee, she adds, as well as support from North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s working group on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harrison also anticipates working closely with two Sea Grant national communities of practice \u2014 \u201cTraditional and Local Knowledge\u201d and \u201cDiversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Accessibility\u201d \u2014 which launched the program in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSince then, all 34 Sea Grant programs have participated,\u201d she says. \u201cLast summer alone, North Carolina Sea Grant mentored four undergraduates<\/a> under Community Engaged Internships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Frank L\u00f3pez, extension director for North Carolina Sea Grant, will supervise a new, full-time Community Engaged Internship coordinator, based at NC State University\u2019s campus in Raleigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe plan to post this position soon,\u201d L\u00f3pez says. \u201cAnd we strongly encourage applicants from under-resourced and underrepresented communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
