Contact: Posted Friday, January 30, 2015

The SciREN Coast 2015 networking event on Feb. 12 at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores will be an evening of relaxed conversations among educators and researchers. Researchers will provide educators with K-12 classroom-ready lesson plans based on their current work. The lessons adhere to state and national educational standards.

SciREN, known also as The Scientific Research and Education Network, also gives researchers and educators opportunities to collaborate. Teachers also may earn license renewal and Environmental Education Certificate credits.

“Both groups — researchers and classroom teachers — can learn much from each other. Scientists are exposed to a new audience (or two) for their research; they learn about the state’s standard course of study; and their enthusiasm and passion for their research help recruit another generation of scientists,” says Terri Kirby-Hathaway, North Carolina Sea Grant marine education specialist. “Teachers are exposed to current content and research methods; their curiosity and desire for additional knowledge may be renewed; and they gain guest speakers for their classrooms, as well as judges for science fairs.”

Researchers in a STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) field looking to share educational materials about their work and research are welcome as well to be participants. They are expected to have classroom-ready materials to hand out to educators.

The event will last from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Food will be provided. This is a FREE event. All interested classroom teachers, other educators and researchers are welcome.

To register, go to www.thesciren.org and follow links to Networking Events, then SciREN Coast 2015 and Educator Registration.

Participating sponsors include The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and North Carolina Sea Grant.

Read more about SciREN in the following North Carolina Sea Grant blogs and Coastwatch article:

###

North Carolina Sea Grant: Your link to research and resources for a healthier coast

The SciREN Coast 2015 networking event on Feb. 12 at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores will be an evening of relaxed conversations among educators and researchers.
