There are many ongoing efforts to expand shellfish aquaculture in North Carolina. In North Carolina Sea Grant’s Autumn 2015 issue of Coastwatch magazine, E-Ching Lee reports on two that were started by Sea Grant funding."Coastwatch

Southern flounder is the most economically important estuarine finfish in the state, according to data from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. To keep the fishery open, DMF is sending observers on fishing boats to target the species. Rhett Register gets the scoop.

On North Carolina’s coast this summer, sharks made a big splash in the news, both locally and globally. Rebecca Nagy explores the coverage of the relatively high number of shark bites. In a related story, shark researcher Chuck Bangley reflects on his interactions with the media in light of the recent activity.

The origins of Carolina bays may still be debated, but not their significance to our coastal world. Join Janna Sasser as she explores what makes these landforms so unique, and so peculiar.

For visitors travelling to the Outer Banks, northeastern North Carolina has a lot to offer to those wanting to “cut the corner,” slow down and enjoy life on the way. Nichole Riddle highlights some historic locations and outdoor adventures along the Roanoke River.

Lee catches up with several Sea Grant-supported fellows to find out what is new and exciting with their research this summer.

A Sea Grant specialist is working with a seafood retailer to find new uses for a coastal standard — mullet. We share three smoked mullet recipes adapted from Mariner’s Menu: 30 Years of Fresh Seafood Ideas.
