Jane Harrison, North Carolina Sea Grant coastal economics specialist, recently completed a program through the Equal Opportunity Institute<\/a> at NC State University. Participants increase their knowledge of equal opportunity issues in the workplace and develop skills to excel in varied professional and academic environments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I have learned will help me to reach and serve diverse audiences in my work for North Carolina Sea Grant,\u201d says Harrison. Her research has included economic and workforce development with high-school students in eastern North Carolina and fishermen along the Atlantic Coast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis knowledge will be useful for my work with the national Sea Grant Network, too,\u201d she adds. With colleagues from Sea Grant programs across the country, Harrison is documenting a series of best practices and developing recommendations for the national network to broaden the reach of, and increase inclusion in, activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very pleased that Jane took the initiative to enroll in this program,\u201d says Jack Thigpen, North Carolina Sea Grant extension director. \u201cHer experience will add value to our outreach programming \u2014 as well as to activities of the 32 other programs in the Sea Grant network \u2014 to appeal to and assist additional audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The institute, part of NC State\u2019s\u00a0Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity<\/a>,\u00a0offers this yearlong, professional-development certificate to the university’s students and employees, as well as the public. For more information, go to oied.ncsu.edu\/eoi<\/a>.<\/p>\n
