North Carolina Sea Grant\u2019s Coastwatch<\/em><\/a> magazine\u2019s Holiday issue<\/a> introduces new community collaborations, looks at recovery from past hurricanes, and looks ahead to N.C. Space Grant\u2019s opportunities.<\/p>\n

Diana Hackenburg profiles five new projects<\/a> funded by the N.C. Community Collaborative Research Grant program, jointly supported by Sea Grant and the William R. Kenan Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science at NC State University.<\/p>\n

Susan White, Sea Grant\u2019s executive director, also now leads Space Grant in the state. Katie Mosher shares the synergies for the programs, along with the Water Resources Research Institute, another statewide program that White directs. Two current Sea Grant\/Space Grant fellowships are featured: Lindsey Smart\u2019s research about ghost forests<\/a>, and Seth Theuerkauf\u2019s study of oyster reef restoration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A number of N.C. communities are still recovering from Hurricane Matthew that hit in October 2016. Danielle Costantini outlines recovery efforts in Windsor, including projects led by Barbara Doll from Sea Grant. Another Sea Grant extension specialist, Jane Harrison shares her experience evaluating the National Weather Service\u2019s response to Hurricane Harvey that hit along the Gulf Coast this year. Also Florida, Texas, Mississippi and Puerto Rico Sea Grant programs detail hurricane recovery efforts in their states this year.<\/p>\n

North Carolina Sea Grant also celebrates the 67 combined years of service from Sandra Harris and Vanda Lewis<\/a> \u2014 who made a world of difference to colleagues and the program.<\/p>\n

Sarah Spiegler offers tide tips and other lessons learned from years of paddling around the Crystal Coast. Also new fellows are starting new research projects funded jointly by Sea Grant\/Space Grant, as well as Sea Grant\/Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership.<\/p>\n

Finally, it is still oyster season in the state, so consider trying these fresh and simple recipes<\/a> from Mariner\u2019s Menu <\/em>to celebrate the holidays.<\/p>\n
