Coastal Resilience Summit to Lay Groundwork for NC Plan

On June 11 and 12, the Havelock Tourist and Event Center will host the North Carolina Coastal Resilience Summit. The Summit will inform the development of the North Carolina Coastal Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan under Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 80.

The plan will propel the coastal region’s preparedness for changes in climate, including rising sea levels, increased frequency and severity of coastal and riverine flooding, increasingly extreme weather, changing groundwater conditions and other shifting natural conditions. The Summit will showcase a wide array of existing solutions to address such challenges.

The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management is partnering with a diverse group of coastal community stakeholders to identify and evaluate coastal climate risks, as well as which policy and management strategies to consider for the resiliency plan. Potential strategies include:

• Prioritizing current and anticipated climate risks to the coast that the resiliency plan must address.
• Policy and management lessons stakeholders learned from recent extreme weather.
• Evaluating strengths and weaknesses of existing and potential policies and management measures that address climate risks to coastal communities and the environment.
• Identifying and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of potential mitigation and adaptation strategies and practices that the plan might include.
• Determining research and policy gaps that need review and analysis.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management and the North Carolina Coastal Federation are hosting the summit in coordination with North Carolina Sea Grant, Eastern Carolina Council, Cape Fear Public Utilities Authority, Albemarle Commission, Mid-East Commission, The Nature Conservancy, UNC School of Government, Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP), Brooks Pierce and others.
