Raleigh Charter High School Wins Blue Heron Bowl
Riding the Wave to the Nationals
Raleigh Charter High School came out on top at the 2019 Blue Heron Bowl, earning a spot this spring at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
The Blue Heron Bowl challenges teams of five high school students each on knowledge of marine science topics. North Carolina Sea Grant is among the long-time sponsors of the quiz bowl event.
Teams from across the state competed in the regional bowl, which the University of North Carolina Wilmington hosted for the third straight year. Twelve teams began the round robin competition. At the end of the day, two teams were left to compete in the final round. Raleigh Charter and the North Carolina School of Science and Math, last year’s regional winner, went head-to-head in a double elimination match to decide the winner.
Following their success at the Blue Heron Bowl, the Raleigh Charter team headed to the 2019 national competition in Washington D.C. They faced off against 25 other regional champions.
The theme for the national competition was “Observe the Ocean; Secure the Future.” This year’s winning team was from Albany, California.
Sea Grant offers congratulations to all the teams that participated in the Blue Heron Bowl and National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
