Science Communication Internship (PAID)
The paid Science Communication Intern position creates and edits content in collaboration with the communication team serving North Carolina Sea Grant, the NC Water Resources Research Institute, and North Carolina Space Grant. Primary responsibilities will support North Carolina Sea Grant’s web and print communications, and these duties will also include administrative tasks and other activities.
We invite applications from graduate students in any subject area in any department at NC State. Experience is a plus in any of these areas: translating science and writing for lay audiences, reporting, editing, video editing/production, content management systems, design and layout, and/or social media for institutions or groups.
The Science Communication Intern will support the production of Coastwatch, North Carolina Sea Grant’s flagship publication, as well as other parts of the program’s print and online presence.
Main duties will include some or all of the following:
drafting content
searching for images to accompany text
researching background on policy, events, and people
conducting interviews by email, Zoom, and phone
drafting content for news releases and stories
posting online news releases and stories, adding images and hyperlinks
proofreading, editing, and updating content
formatting print products for online publication.
The Science Communication Intern also may assist with additional print products, social media, Powerpoint presentations, preparations for meetings, compilation of materials for events, and/or other miscellaneous requests.
This hybrid position includes time at the North Carolina Sea Grant offices on Centennial Campus. Remote and on-location hours will fall within 8:30AM and 5:00PM, Monday through Thursday. Hours are flexible within that timeframe, for a total of 5 to 10 hours/week.
