Jennette’s Pier Features Hook, Line & Science Videos

As the fall fishing season gets underway, Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head offers visitors a new opportunity to learn about coastal fisheries via Hook, Line & Science.

North Carolina Sea Grant’s popular blog is now featured in a video exhibit at the pier, part of the North Carolina Aquariums. “It is a natural partnership to share the Sea Grant science outreach with our audiences,” says Mike Remige, pier director and a member of the North Carolina Sea Grant Advisory Board.

Those audiences include all ages. In normal years, the pier draws about 300,000 visitors to view educational exhibits, and about 175,000 who pay to access the pier.

In the exhibit, three videos play in sequence highlighting some of the blog’s most popular topics.

• Do You Eat Seafood Three or More Times a Week?
• What Does the Invasive Lionfish Eat?

A fourth video that introduces North Carolina Grant was created in a previous project.

Sara Mirabilio and Scott Baker, Sea Grant fisheries specialists, developed and write the weekly Hook, Line & Science blog, working with editor Dave Shaw. “One of our main goals with the blog is to educate anglers about scientific research that relates to fishing,” Baker says.

“We focus on themes that, according to our previous survey, are of highest interest to N.C. saltwater anglers,” Mirabilio adds.

NC State’s DELTA office assisted with video production, and the Coastal Studies Institute, part of East Carolina University, permitted software reuse and provided IT support.
