As Memorial Day approaches, a busy beach season is on the horizon. So, too, is National Rip Current Awareness Week that kicks off June 1 and runs through June 7. Designated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and the U.S. Lifesaving Association, the week promotes educational programs about rip currents — and how to stay safe while enjoying our beautiful beaches. Putnam, Doll Earn Regional Sea Grant Honor

Small Group of Genes Influence Egg Quality

Scientists from North and South Carolina recently completed a study that highlights the role of gene groups in embryo development. They conducted their research using striped bass (Morone saxatilis), a finfish used in aquaculture that has problems with arrested development in eggs. Results of this research, funded in part by North Carolina Sea Grant and South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, are published in the open access journal, PLOS ONE.
