North Carolina Sea Grant works closely with coastal communities to effectively prepare for and improve resilience to natural hazards like floods.
Hyde County
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 83 percent of residents in Hyde County, North Carolina, live in the 100-year floodplain, as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA.
In Hyde County, Sea Grant partnered with the county, Georgia Sea Grant, the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government and UGA Marine Extension Service to study community resilience and adaptation options for flooding. This project resulted in several products, including a flood planning and resilience guide for residents, a series of flood planning posters, and an informational video.
