Meet our past interns
Manny Valbuena Pena
As an intern, Manny Valbuena Pena researched climate justice issues in Raleigh during the summer of 2022. He was an environmental engineering major at NC State University who applied for master’s programs in urban planning, in part due to his internship experience. Valbuena explored urban revitalization and renewal, addressing historically disinvested areas of the city as well as the problem of gentrification. For Valbuena, the internship linked his STEM background with a passion for social justice.
“You can’t have environmental justice without having social justice first.”
