North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for the 2019 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant Office.

The program places graduate students in Washington, D.C., to work on federal policies and processes affecting ocean, coastal and Great Lakes issues. The dates of the fellowship are Feb. 1, 2019 to Feb. 28, 2020.

“We are proud to have exceptional students here in North Carolina to recommend for this fellowship opportunity to explore important ocean and coastal issues,” notes John Fear, North Carolina Sea Grant deputy director.

The national program anticipates funding a minimum of 35 fellows from around the country. Placements range from U.S. Senate and House offices to many executive departments, NOAA programs and other agencies. The prestigious fellowship honors John A. Knauss, who was a Sea Grant founder, NOAA administrator and dean of the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography.

North Carolina Sea Grant will nominate students from graduate or professional programs, regardless of citizenship. Students must be enrolled in a North Carolina academic institution at the time of application deadline. Up to six North Carolina candidates may be nominated to the National Sea Grant Office for the final selection process.

Applications must be received by Feb. 23, 2018 at 5 p.m. North Carolina Sea Grant will bring in candidates for face-to-face interviews to be held the week of March 19, 2018, in Raleigh.

Applications through North Carolina Sea Grant must be completed online through the eSeaGrant portal: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg.

Ian Kroll, a 2017 Knauss Fellow, is focusing on natural resource policy topics at the Fish and Aquatic Conservation Branch within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Currently, North Carolina Sea Grant has two fellows placed as finalists for the 2018 Knauss fellowship. Elizabeth Clark will be with the NOAA Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Brianna Elliott will be with the U.S. State Department.
