North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications from N.C. graduate students for the 2020 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant Office. The deadline is Feb. 22, 2019.
The prestigious fellowship honors John A. Knauss, who was a Sea Grant founder, NOAA administrator and dean of the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Placements for fellows have included U.S. Senate and House offices, departments in the executive branch, NOAA programs and other agencies.
The program places graduate students in Washington, D.C. to work on federal policies and processes that affect ocean, coastal and Great Lakes issues. The dates of the fellowship are Feb. 1, 2020 to Feb. 28, 2021.
“We are honored to nominate strong North Carolina students for this opportunity every year,” says John Fear, North Carolina Sea Grant deputy director. “Fellows gain vital professional experience in marine policy that informs their future research and careers.”
North Carolina Sea Grant will nominate students from graduate or professional programs, regardless of citizenship. Students must be enrolled in a North Carolina academic institution at the time of application deadline. Up to six North Carolina candidates will be nominated to the National Sea Grant Office for the national level competition.
Applications must be received by Feb. 22, 2019 at 5 p.m. North Carolina Sea Grant uses face-to-face interviews as part of the state-level review process. These will take place in Raleigh in mid-March 2019.
Detailed instructions are online in North Carolina Sea Grant’s application portal, eSeaGrant: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg. All applications must be completed in the portal.
North Carolina Sea Grant has four 2019 Knauss Fellows: Alicia M. Cheripka, Jill Hamilton, and Chrissy Hayes will serve in executive branch offices. William Thaxton will serve in a legislative branch office. Their placements are highlighted in a news release, and the Summer 2018 issue of Coastwatch includes information about their backgrounds.
