The 2021 NC Coastal Research Fellowship Opens for Proposals

North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve are accepting applications for the 2021 North Carolina Coastal Research Fellowship.

Graduate students based in North Carolina have the opportunity to conduct research within one or more of the 10 sites that constitute the Coastal Reserve. Using the reserve sites as a research platform, next year’s fellow will conduct hypothesis-based research that addresses coastal management issues in one or more of the following areas:

Effects of air quality, water quality, and/or disturbance on coastal habitats and associated flora and fauna.
Sources, composition, and impacts of marine debris.
Impact of invasive species on coastal ecosystems and human communities.
Evaluation of habitat restoration practices and/or shoreline stabilization approaches.
Examination of link(s) between coastal processes and ecosystem response.
Groundwater/surface water connections and implications for habitats and associated flora/fauna.

“This fellowship program, entering its second decade of service to North Carolina graduate students, is looking to continue its strong track record of student training and research results for the Reserve System,” says John Fear, deputy director for North Carolina Sea Grant. “I look forward to reading all the excellent applications from our Universities’ main campuses and their coastal labs.”

North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Reserve strongly encourage proposals from graduate students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, and/or from traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, as well as from graduate students who can demonstrate how their work and related outreach will benefit underserved and underrepresented communities.

Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Monday, Dec 7, 2020.

North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Reserve anticipate awarding one fellowship for $10,000. All work must take place Jan 11, 2021 through Dec 31, 2021.
