North Carolina-based researchers are invited to propose research studies that would meet resource management needs identified by North Carolina state agencies. Due date for proposal submission is Dec. 4, 2023.

“North Carolina Sea Grant is pleased to offer this opportunity for the research community to directly connect with agencies that manage critical natural resources in our coastal region and related watersheds,” says John Fear, deputy director. “We encourage submissions from researchers across the state, including those at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions.”

The focus areas this year include:

  • Blue crab
  • Oysters
  • Other Shellfish (scallops, clams, shrimp)
  • Habitat

The full request for proposals identifies specific topics for each focus area. It is available on the NC Sea Grant website.

Proposals must be for one-year projects, with budgets up to $60,000 in grant funds. Projects will be funded with state dollars, which do not allow indirect costs to be charged. Matching funds are not required but are encouraged, especially for full-budget request proposals.

Proposals must include a hypothesis-based research question and a strong outreach/extension component. Sea Grant is not able to fund monitoring-only projects and ones that involve human subjects.

To ensure that the proposed research is usable and readily transferred to agencies, projects must demonstrate that significant coordination has occurred with the management agencies during proposal development.
