North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for a new position to coordinate the national Community Engaged Internship Program. The Community Internship Coordinator will serve on behalf of the 34 state-based Sea Grant programs in 2024 and 2025.

Jane Harrison, program lead, says the coordinator will facilitate the selection of 40 student interns from underrepresented and indigenous communities. Through the program, undergraduates will receive funding, professional development, hands-on experience, and more.

“The overarching goal of this internship program is to broaden participation in marine and coastal professions by providing training and mentorship to the next generation of scientists, decision makers, and community leaders,” Harrison says.

In addition to managing the process for internship selections, the position also will coordinate professional development activities and administrate financial support for students.

“We strongly encourage applicants from under-resourced and underrepresented communities,” says Susan White, executive director of North Carolina Sea Grant. “This position will benefit from strong collaboration with national Sea Grant partners, as well as support from North Carolina Sea Grant’s working group on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Accessibility.”

The Community Internship Coordinator will be essential to the program’s mission, White adds, helping to provide invaluable opportunities for undergraduate students over the next two years.
