Graduate students have a real-world challenge to tell the story of their research.

North Carolina Sea Grant is hosting a symposium on April 6 and 7 in New Bern to help them identify and improve communications skills for a variety of settings.Word cloud

Conveying Your Message is the theme for the program at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. The event is free. Registration is required, with limited seats available.

“We are excited to offer this symposium not only for students funded by North Carolina Sea Grant but also for graduate students across the state,” notes John Fear, deputy director.

The program opens April 6, with an afternoon plenary and training session before a poster reception. April 7 is a full day looking at communication strategies, audiences and avenues.

Speakers include documentarian Art Howard, as well as Holly Menninger, who leads public science efforts in the NC State University College of Sciences. Session topics include:

  • Developing and presenting your “elevator message.”
  • Writing a successful grant proposal.
  • Incorporating extension and outreach activities in your work.

Check out the agenda and registration details online at: ncseagrant.ncsu.edu/grad_comm.

Some travel scholarships will be available.
