The North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve joins North Carolina Sea Grant to open applications for a joint fellowship, with proposals due by 5 p.m., Nov. 21, 2016.

The N.C. Coastal Research Fellowship provides North Carolina-based graduate students with an opportunity to conduct research within one or more of the 10 sites that constitute the Coastal Reserve. “Using the reserve sites as a research platform, fellows must conduct hypothesis-based projects that address coastal management issues,” notes Brandon Puckett, research coordinator for the Coastal Reserve.

The proposed research must fit into one or more of the following broad focus areas:

  • Interaction between ecosystem services and changing environmental conditions.
  • Resilience or vulnerability of coastal ecosystems and human communities to coastal hazards.
  • Linkages among land use and water quality and/or water quality and coastal habitats.
  • Evaluation of habitat restoration practices and/or shoreline stabilization approaches.
  • Impact of invasive species on coastal ecosystems and human communities.

“These focus areas reflect the research and outreach missions of both programs in serving coastal North Carolina,” adds John Fear, Sea Grant deputy director.

One $10,000 fellowship is expected to be awarded. All work must be completed by Dec. 31, 2017.
