The National Sea Grant Program has opened a competitive funding opportunity for the National Aquaculture Initiative.

Interested parties must partner with a state-based Sea Grant program, which will submit final applications. Details for proposal preparation and other formal requirements are found in the official federal funding opportunity:

NOAA-OAR-SG-2018-2005489: NOAA National Sea Grant College Program 2018 Ocean, Coastal and Great Lakes National Aquaculture Initiative

Initial proposals from N.C. partners are due to North Carolina Sea Grant by 5 p.m. on March 2, 2018, to ensure they are completed and submitted by the final deadline for the national competition. Proposals should be submitted by email to Mary Beth Barrow at mebarrow@ncsu.edu.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to reach out one to two months prior to the Sea Grant program’s application deadline to discuss their proposal. N.C researchers should contact John Fear at jmfear@ncsu.edu or 919-515-9104; or Chuck Weirich at chuck_weirich@ncsu.edu or 252-222-6314.

Depending on appropriations, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Sea Grant Program expect to have a total of $7,000,000 to $11,500,000 available across fiscal years 2018, 2019 and 2020 as part of the Sea Grant National Aquaculture Initiative. This competition is designed to foster the expansion of a sustainable U.S. ocean, coastal and Great Lakes aquaculture sector by addressing one or more of the following priorities:
  • (a) supporting the development of emerging systems or technologies that will advance aquaculture in the U.S., including projects that will help stimulate aquaculture production by nascent industries;
  • (b) developing and implementing actionable methods of communicating accurate, science-based messages and information about the benefits and risks of U.S. marine aquaculture to the public; and
  • (c) increasing the resiliency of aquaculture systems to natural hazards and changing conditions.
