Sea Grant Accepting 2018 Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Applications

North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for the 2018 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant Office.

The one-year program places graduate students in Washington, D.C., to work on federal policies and processes affecting ocean, coastal and Great Lakes issues. The award amount is $61,500. The fellowship starts on Feb. 1, 2018, and cannot be renewed or deferred.

“North Carolina Sea Grant is proud of the caliber of students that we are able to send to D.C. Our Knauss alumni have continued their work in ocean and coastal issues — and credit the fellowship as a significant experience,” notes John Fear, deputy director.

That National Sea Grant Office anticipates funding a minimum of 30 fellows from around the country. Their placements range from U.S. Senate offices to the U.S. Department of State Office of Marine Conservation, many NOAA programs and other agencies. The prestigious fellowship honors John A. Knauss, who was a Sea Grant founder, NOAA administrator and dean of the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography.

North Carolina Sea Grant will nominate students from graduate or professional programs in marine and aquatic science or policy, regardless of citizenship. Students must be enrolled in a North Carolina academic institution at the time of application deadline. Up to six North Carolina candidates may be nominated to the National Sea Grant Office for the final selection process.

Applications must be received by 5 p.m., Feb. 21, 2017. North Carolina Sea Grant will conduct face-to-face interviews in Raleigh.

Applications through North Carolina Sea Grant must be completed online through the eSeaGrant portal: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg. Materials to provide include:

• A personal and academic CV, no more than two pages;
• A statement of goals, 1,000 words or less, outlining motivation for applying and expectations from the fellowship in the way of career development;
• Two signed letters of recommendation, including one from the student’s major professor; and
• A list of classes and/or plans through fall 2017 (not to exceed one page).
